About

Remembering Bear Brown

Bear lived in western Washington State, in the foothills of the Cascades. When he was three, his mother caught him drawing on the walls with crayons, but she didn’t get mad at him, she just told him that his picture was very nice, but that he should not draw on the walls.

She then got him a HUGE stack of paper, and told him that he could draw whatever he wanted ON THE PAPER, and when he ran out she would buy him more. he discovered sci-fi in the 4th grade, reading works by Stanislaw Lem (a wonderful Polish author) and Isaac Asimov (I robot!, and other short stories).

The cover art to these kinds of books fascinated him, and he quickly realized there were no limits to either the art, or the stories that inspired them. After high school, he attended Green River Community Collage for three years, but never with the intention of getting a degree. he took every art class he could, from drawing & design, to hand made paper & sculpture, But somehow never managed to take a painting class.

After a few years, and many adventures, he began tattooing as a career. with no formal apprenticeship, but a broad background in art, he was hired 3 months later by emerald City Tattoo in Seattle. he quickly became bored with the flash art on the walls that customers would ask to get, day in and out. 6 months after, he left to work for himself, and have been doing custom tattooing since.

During all this he started attending Sci-fi/ Fantasy conventions, and found his true family. he had been showing his work in the convention art shows for a few years now. then Jan of 2000 he was invited to RustyCon 17 (which has an average attendance of about 1,100 fans) as Artist Guest of Honor. he received awards for ‘best sci-fi’ and ‘best humor’. he had been working on increasing his portfolio since then, with recent forays into computer generated art. Enjoy!
